Not only is the Democratic Republic of the Congo still in the grip of a measles outbreak that has killed more people – 6,200 in total, 5,300 of them children – than Ebola, but COVID-19 cases are on the rise as well. Some 442 people have tested positive, 28 of whom have died.

“We are extremely concerned that diminishing humanitarian access will generate major challenges for the country, already overwhelmed and under-resourced with its health services,” said Babar Baloch, spokesman for UNHCR, the United Nations’ refugee agency.

If the country is to have any chance of tackling COVID-19, aid workers say, it has no option but to ensure that the Ebola epidemic is finished once and for all.

Researchers at UC San Diego Health have found that loss of smell related to COVID-19 suggests the resulting illness is more likely to be mild to moderate, a potential early indicator that could help health care providers determine which patients may require hospitalization.

The researchers said the findings possibly hint at some of the characteristics of the infection. In other words, if the virus initially concentrates in the nose and upper airway, that may result in an infection that is less severe, decreasing the risk of overwhelming the host immune response.
